Top 5 Reasons Every School Counselor Should Be On Twitter!

My Top 5 ReasonsHi All,

Sorry for the lack of posts recently. I recently relocated for my new (first!) job as a full-time school counselor in a middle school. School starts in a week and I cant wait to meet all the students.

But on to the post….

This summer I had my one- year Twitterversary! I joined twitter last summer in the midst of the 2013 ASCA conference. When I joined I wasn’t sure I would keep my twitter account past the conference, but I quickly changed my mind. Here are my top 5 reasons I believe every school counselor should be on twitter:

1. Networking

I am an introvert by nature and networking can be challenging for me, especially in larger settings. I remember feeling a crazy amount of pressure to network at a conference I attended recently. I was told that it is important to make connections as I was about to enter the job market as a school counselor for the first time. They were correct – those connections do matter – and I met some awesome people at those conferences; however, the majority of the time I felt awkward. On Twitter I have never felt that way, yet I have met some remarkable school counselors from my home state as well as around the world. This leads me to my 2nd reason…

2. Quick Answers

I have posted dozens of questions over the course of this last year and I have almost always received a response. As a new counselor I am aware that I have a lot to learn; however, I imagine that I will feel similarly ten years into this career. Twitter allows me to connect with hundreds of educators – teachers, counselors, principals… – from around the world. I am able to gain fresh ideas by asking how they address a certain situation or what resources they use when teaching about a certain topic. As a recent graduate I was also able to get answers about school districts, intervention plans that were new to me, and a lot more. Make sure you are using hashtags: #scchat #sccrowd #schoolcounselor #schoolcounseling #escchat (elementary school) #mscchat (middle school) #hscchat (high school) #edchat
The hashtags allow people who care about that subject to see & search for your tweet. Using hashtags makes it likely that you will get a response.

3. Great Support

I feel like I am blessed and proud to be joining such a great profession. As counselors, we are helpers by nature. Twitter allows us to give each other support when having a hard moment. For example, when I was job searching there was one afternoon that I felt pretty defeated. It seemed like the majority of jobs I was being interviewed for already had someone in mind. I posted something on twitter and a wonderful counselor lifted my spirits and helped me change my perspective. As school counselors we are all going to have tough moments and a few bad days. Twitter is a great platform to be reminded that what we do does have a positive impact and it does matter. Those who tweet can be a great listening ear, but also a great help in changing our perspective.

4. Twitter Chats!

I love, love, love twitter chats. I really believe the chats I attended this past year were like an extension of my graduate classes. By participating in twitter chats I have been able to learn from some of the best school counselors in the world. What is a twitter chat? It is chat that takes place either at a set-time or is an on-going conversation. You hop on twitter and join by using their set hashtags, similar to how you could get answers to your questions. One of my favorites is #scchat which meets the first Tuesday of every month. The next meeting is on Tuesday, September 2nd at 8pm EST.

5. Shared Passion

I am very new to the profession but I have heard repeatedly through my graduate school career that school counseling can be a very isolating profession if you allow it to be so.  I am thankful to have joined a school counseling team so I will be working closely with 2 other counselors in my school. Yet I know that it is important to branch out and stay connected with other school counselors. Whether you work in a counseling office of 10 or if you work solo twitter is a wonderful way to connect with others who share the same passion for school counseling. I believe that it is important to continually connect with those who share the passion for our work as a way to keep the passion ignited and to try to avoid burnout.

Hey there! I started blogging about my experiences through graduate school and now have continued as a working school counselor. I am currently working in an elementary school but try hard to keep up-to-date on all things school counselor, as well as topics in education. I hope to share ideas, document what I am doing, network, be inspired, inspire, and collaborate with others through this blog. My professional portfolio can be found here: Thanks for stopping by!
